Iain Archer
Iain Archer Stems From Perfection
As established a solo artist as a great oak rooted in an evergreen forest (quite apt for such a beautiful album title) it seems that Iain Archer goes from strength to strength as he relays his gift to the world.
Northern Irish born Archer has past credits from workings with artists such as The Reindeer Section, Freelance Hellraiser and Burning Codes. Not only this but, his phenomenal, heart warming ‘Canal Song’ was featured on popular US series Grey’s Anatomy.
Previous notable albums ‘Flood The Tanks’ and ‘Magnetic North’ were highly acclaimed and quite rightly so as the lyrical and musical artistry of these records just proved what a song writing prodigy Archer is.
‘To The Pine Roots’ for me is a skyline up, I use this term as these songs create a feeling as euphoric as flying. He has taken things right back, stripped everything away to reveal a beautiful frame and certain frankness that has the ability to create something on a scale as grand as a symphony.
Songs such as ‘Songbird’ contain that vocal fragility that Archer manifests so well. A naïve sound that ironically vocalises such mature words. The presence of folk and country at this table have brought together something quite special, so special that you find yourself skipping songs back before even finishing the album.
‘Black Mountain Quarry’ is my personal favourite, a novel inside a song, the imagery is so spectacular that you are able to create every item and scene with your mind. If you were going to live in a shell and not come out this would somehow tantalise you to come out. The irregular percussion and lines such as ‘my heart inside my hopeful chest’ make your head bop in time and smile in a way that makes everything better.
Each song paints a different landscape and time. The characters in songs are described in a way that an author would do so in a cleverly written novel but Archer is so brilliantly imaginative that these are used to incorporate his emotions. This album projects every emotion you have and engages you in a way that it is just you, this soundtrack and your minds paintbrush.
Seasons transition and for me so do songwriters. Iain Archer has transitioned to a symmetry that is completeness. Completeness of everything one looks for in music. ‘To The Pine Roots’ is one of those albums that you must have in your collection, the one you come back to time and time again and remember with a fondness that creates a smell, memory and fe eling you will never forget.
